Villahermosa 2050

Living on the Delta Tabasqueño

Villahermosa, 350,000 inhabitants, is surrounded by water, the Grijalva river with its tributaries, Samaria, Carrizal and El Viejo rivers. Within the city itself, there is a rich and complex system of lagoons, like Las Ilusiones, Chilapa, El Campo, El Horizonte, Puché y Maluco, among others. However, at the same time, this privileged hydrological position can be a risk factor for the city. Constant floods are life threatening to the inhabitants.

About this project

The main objective of this development is that the city and its inhabitants “cohabit with water”. With this point of view, we are adding to the city’s sustainable mobility, effective use of green areas, strategic densification, resourceful use of public spaces, and the increase of economic and touristic areas. With hydrological measures, we reduce risks, and water is used and seen as a valuable part of the city.

The project started with a design workshop in Villahermosa city. During two intensive days, 30 participants from different governmental and non-governmental organizations designed possible strategies for the 2050 vision of development. The main results are based on recovering the city’s water system, redesigning public spaces, populating specific areas and researching a “tabasqueña” architecture. The result of the workshop is a booklet where possible lines of development are determined. The project will continue with a deeper look at these possible lines of development and the determination of projects for resourceful use of spaces that can be used in the short term.
