Integral vision "Rescue of the Atoyac River"
River rescue comprehensive strategy and proposals of urban-hydrological acupuncture, approx.. 20 kilometersThe Atoyac River was selected as a priority project to be developed during the participatory design workshops organized by the Oaxaca de Juarez municipality. The sanitation and embellishment of the river is the best strategy for urban development for Oaxaca City and the best contribution for the development of Oaxaca’s metropolitan area and its surroundings. Water, the sacred element of Mesoamerican culture, has a central role in the development of the city.
About this project
The project aims to transform the river into one of the most important public spaces in the city. The strategy places the river as a central axis for economic, touristic, social and ecological development. It is intended to revitalize the river, its riverfronts, tributary streams, streets and green areas by using the different urban-hydrological acupunctures. This will increase life quality of the surrounding neighborhoods.
The vision and strategy of the project, as well as the election and prioritization of possible acupunctures, were carried out with citizen, governmental and non-governmental organizations active participation through design workshops and conferences.
With this vision of river rescue, the municipal government has a transformation strategy widely supported by the society. This strategy incorporates the main discussed topics in the workshops: flood prevention, water use, public spaces, urban planning, roads and economic development. The project has a great degree of flexibility, where the acupunctures can be assessed periodically, incorporating new acupunctures and performing executive projects for the best results.
