The last week of July I participated in interesting meetings with Secretary of Environment, Biodiversity, Energy and Sustainability, Secretary of Strategic Projects and Municipal President of the Municipality of San Andrés Huayapam.
In the past weeks, we had the privilege of guiding new walking tours in both Rotterdam and Amsterdam for groups from Palestine and Morocco, thanks to The Hague Academy for Local Governance.
Our BD+P office has been selected by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) to form a cluster of Dutch water sector companies looking to work and seize opportunities in Mexico, supported by the Partners for International Business (PIB) program. Yesterday, we hosted a workshop attended by various sector companies, where the benefits of the program were explained, and the participants worked collaboratively to solve specific problems in the Mexican cities of León and Salamanca.
Last May 7 I was invited by the College of Architects of Neuquén, Cutral Có – Plaza Huincul delegation to give the conference “Sustainable Cities: The Value of Water”. The objective was to inspire local professionals in comprehensive planning while using water efficiently and be able to face climate change.
On September 6, El Consejo Federal de Inversiones, The Center for Inquiry Argentina (CFI), headed by its president Ignacio Lamothe, along with other functionaries from the 23 provinces of Argentina, visited the Netherlands. The program was organized by the Netherlands Water Partnership. My office coordinated a 'water tour' in the city of Rotterdam, where I showed the visitors a few urban resilient projects in which water is the common thread.
On September 4, we presented the draft of the report “Sustainable urban mobility in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, and Uruguay: market analysis for Dutch companies”. The topic we developed was urban, smart, electric, safe, and sustainable mobility. Maria Rodrigues, of the Dutch office Panteia, and I presented the preliminary conclusions of the study to an audience of representatives of the governments of Argentina, Chile, and Costa Rica, and the Dutch Embassies of the Netherlands in Argentina and Chile, and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, RVO. We got important feedback that we’ll include in the final report.
On August 31st, in the framework of collaboration between the Netherlands and Argentina, the NWP (Netherlands Water Partnership) and the Consejo Federal de Inversiones /CFI Argentina , organized an online workshop on Nature-based Solutions. The participants from the Argentine provinces were divided into work-topics. Together with Begoña Arellano Jaimerena from the Dutch company Deltares, we coordinated the “Participatory Process: methods, tools and application cases” table. My partner Adrian Puentes coordinated the NbS table at a regional level. This was a very interesting workshop for sharing our experiences!
With the support of Partners for Water, and together with our partners Field Factors and Centro, we’ll perform a feasibility study in the city of Oaxaca de Juarez. Our ambition is to create a resilient public space where we can store, purify and reuse rainwater, creating a new freshwater source. We’ll use the technical innovative solution of Field Factors, the power of BD+P´s design and the local knowledge provided by Centro to replicate the results in other Mexican cities.
A few days ago we had the opportunity to give a presentation to the Turkish Delegation during their Study Visit within the framework of the EU Support for Promoting Sustainable Urban Mobility in Turkish Cities project.

On November 9, we participated in the meeting "Triangulations in research", where we presented about the challenge of cities facing climate change by 2050. The meeting was organized by prestigious universities in Argentina and Uruguay and was attended by Dr. Joaquín Sabaté , among other referents of urbanism.
Wonderful boat ride in Amsterdam with a team coming from the Ministry of Finance of Bangladesh. We were talking about climate adaptation projects in the Netherlands and our experience abroad and the importance of the long term vision, nature based solutions and smart water management.

On the 19th of October we participated in the congress “the Ukraine Reconstruction and Recovery Conference”, in The Hague, organized by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It was a fruitful experience in which we made contact with other stakeholders with the aim of helping the Ukrainian people.
On October 4th and 5th 2022, Ton Kooymans (owner of the Dutch Bike Parking Academy) and Adrian Puentes (partner of Beccan Davila + Puentes) and Nout Ramaekers (Program Manager at DCE) visited Pristina. The workshop focused on two main subjects: an implementation plan for a bike sharing system in Pristina, and a vision for a cycling-friendly Pristina. It was a very succesful result and we are looking forward for the follow up.
On the 22nd of September we were presenting and discussing at the virtual event "San José. Mobility. Inclusion", which was part of the European Mobility Week 2022 and was developed in Costa Rica by the consortium between Urbanas Lab (Costa Rica), Panteia (NL), and BD+P (NL) with the support of the Municipality of Montes de Oca. Between the 20th and 22nd of September the 3 companies prepared different activities related to mobility and inclusion. In our case we presented the importance of #urbandesign within this context.

Last week we had the opportunity to give a webinar-workshop in one of the three sessions together with Sjors van Duren for the FDOT Statewide Non-Motorized Traffic Monitoring Program (Florida State, US).
The goal was to discuss the meaning of Bicycle (Infrastructure) Comfort and how to create a multidimensional system and culture that is inclusive, comfortable and encourages cycling for all at el Río Trail, FL.

Last week we had the opportunity to give three seminars-workshops for three Georgian cities: Kutaisi, Zugdidi and Tbilisi. The topic was around urban solutions inspired by the Dutch panning tradition and innovation. We shared the sessions with our colleague Dirkjan Douma from RHDHV.

Yesterday, March 1st, I presented the resilient street project Calzada de la República, Mexico. This was part of the introduction to third-year students of the Water Management course, a follow-up of the course “Climatic Street”, at the Hoogeschool Rotterdam, The Netherlands. I was Invited by teacher Dirkjan Douma. This webinar aimed at inspiring students with a clear example executed from practice. My best wishes and all of success to them!

Adrián Puentes is now partner at Beccan Davila Urbanismo following an extensive career which includes collaborations with BDU since 2013. Adrián expands the office portfolio with his marked ability for design and creativity in the fields of urbanism, landscape and architecture.
The Faculty of Architecture, Art and Design of the Tecnológico de Monterrey-Puebla, Mexico, invited me to carry out a design workshop. For 5 days, my online workshop will focus on visualizing river recovery strategies as well as protecting cities against floods, strengthening the economy and improving the quality of life in the Istmo region in the state of Oaxaca.
This workshop, part of the Climate Change seminar, is coordinated by Mikaël David Waterdrinker and Marta Núñez, lecturers at TEC.
We are interested in making visible the relationship between women, water and urban life. Many times this relationship, however essential, has been neglected, or kept hidden.
We would like to bring forth this bond in our designs and in our work. We believe this could be the start of a new paradigm for the design of space. Moreover, we would like to give attention, credit and respect to women all over the globe who pay great efforts to have access to water, to them and their families.
Together with PLAAN platform, the Latin American Architects Association, with establishment in the Netherlands, we carried out a design workshop with focus on the project “Zarate and the Delta footprint", in Argentina. This workshop is part of the participatory process of stakeholders, both in Argentina and in the Netherlands, where the methodology of "Building with Nature" is a fundamental point.
Last January, we presented the draft of the master plan for Calzada de la República to the Ministry of the Infrastructures of the State of Oaxaca (SINFRA) and to the municipality of the city of Oaxaca de Juárez. This draft incorporates the resilience and climate adaptation measures, carried out by Deltares, and the principles of sustainable mobility, carried out by Move Mobility.
With the aim of contributing in knowledge and the integral rescue of the Atoyac and Salado Rivers, I met with the general director of CONAGUA-Oaxaca, ing. Julio López Hernández and his technical staff.
We began the project “Master Plan for Calzada de la Republica”. This project is part of the cooperation framework between the Netherlands, RVO- Netherlands Enterprise Agency, and the Ministry of Infrastructure of the State of Oaxaca (SINFRA). Our consortium, composed by my office (project leader), Deltares and Move Mobility, was the winner of the tender to carry out the design of the master plan.
I was invited to give a lecture at the “International Seminar on Water Territories”, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The seminar is organized by the Di Tella Foundation and Delta Alliance Argentina, and with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
We won! Our team, composed of Beccan Davila Urbanismo, Deltares, Move Mobility and local partners in Oaxaca, architect Gabriela Vargas and Arquinistas office, became winner of the tender to carry out the project "Development of a Master Plan for the recovery of public pedestrian and cycling spaces and water management in the Calzada de la República in Oaxaca, Mexico". We are excited to get started and contribute for improvements in this charming city.
The book “Adaptive Strategies for Water Heritage, Past, Present and Future”, Editorial Springer has just been published. The book includes our academic article “Studying Ancient Water Management in Monte Albán, Mexico, to Solve Water Issues, Improve Urban Living, and Protect Heritage in the Present”, developed by me and the doctor in archeology Araceli Rojas.
In October, we organized, together with the municipality of Zárate, a series of round tables where we exchanged ideas with stakeholders for this project. We talked about the common ambitions and the information we need for this process of Building with Nature. All the stakeholders were very enthusiastic and participatory.
Today we present our winning project "Avenida Verde, Monte Alban" at the workshop organized by the Ministry of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development, SEDATU, and the Inter-American Bank of Development, BID.
A group of professionals from the urban development department of the city of Al Najaf, Iraq, visited my office. Al Najaf has approximately 1,000,000 inhabitants, and is the third sacred city in Iraq, important for Shiites and the rest of Islam. The city is located south of Baghdad and is located between the Euphrates River and Lake Najaf.
I participated in the seminar on Green Cities. It was a good initiative from the EBDR in collaboration with RVO. I participated in the roundtables Water management (Tirana, Albania) and Resilience (Batumi, Georgia).
Towards a sustainable territory with the philosophy "Building with nature"
My office got the assignment from the Dutch Business Agency (RVO), under the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy of the Netherlands, to develop a vision for a sustainable development and spatial planning, design its implementation strategy and sketch a start-up project for the island sector of Zárate.

Resilient cities
On Tuesday, April 30, together with dr. archaeologist Araceli Rojas, we will give a lecture about our Monte Albán Park project.
On 12 March we had a very interesting meeting with Mr. Babur Sabirov, the First Secretary of the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
This year I will continue with my contribution as a guest teacher at the faculty of architecture of the UABJO, Oaxaca, Mexico, at the chair of architect Edmundo Morales.
I was invited to be one of the editors of the nights of debate in Leiden about “condensed cities”
On February 1, I attended a meeting hosted by the Dutch ambassador in Mexico in The Hague.
On January 31, the seminar Sustainable Urban Development in Latin America was held in Den Haag.
We won! Our project Verde in Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan, won the first contest of Mexican Streets of the 21st Century, under the category Street Projects.
